iphone 5 stopped working

My 5 all of a sudden shut off and now wont turn back on. the apple logo actually will come on for about 30 secs or so when i press the power button then it will go out and black screen. if i plug it up the battery pic comes on as if its charging but still nothing happens...what do i do ? Do i need a new battery
