GPU crash on MBP mid 2009

Hi,

I'm experiencing some crash due to GPU panic.

Below report and EtreCcheck Report.

After the crash usually I can't see on system report the discrete graphic card (NVIDIA Geforce 9600M GT).

If I perform a SMC reset then I can see the discrete and use it.

Any help?

Failing discrete GPU chips is a known issues with various Macs (happened to me).

You can force the Mac to use the integrated graphics using gfxCardStatus

gfxCardStatus is a free menu bar application that keeps track of which graphics card your MacBook Pro is using at any given time.

You can force a Macbook Pro to use the Integrated intel graphic via gfxCardStatus

The above does not work on Sierra and beyond, but this works on High Sierra:

I do not know under what conditions the GPU panics the system. It could be heat. It could be a specific sequence of GPU commands, that do not occur often. It could be a combination of heat and commands.

All I know is that for me, when I forced the integrated GPU did not not panic. My MacBook Pro that has the flaky GPU is currently working as a server and stays up as long as I force integrated graphics.

Before I started using gfxCardStatus, my MacBook Pro would panic every few days. When I realized it was a GPU problems, I was using my Mac about 12-14 hours a day, mostly VPN'ed into work. My usage was mostly web browsing, playing music, and writing programs via the Terminal app (my day job is as a Unix software developer). I do not know what triggered the panics.

As for fixing. I do not know how the GPU is attached to the motherboard. You could check iFixIt.com for your specific model Mac.

Also, I'm now using the discrete GPU, I'm editing a video and before I was playing Pillars of eternity for 30 minutes.

And no crash. I mean it seems a random thing. Is it possible that the computer crashes when it try to change the GPU automatically? If it try... I don't even know if el Capitan has such feature. To be honest I didn't really understand what's all this thing with App Nap and dedicated / integrate auto switch. So what do you think?

Thanks.
