Minimizing video issue

Hi, when I watch a video on YouTube and the like, I maximize the video and once the video is completed, I exit full screen. At this point, Safari "goes away" and when I click the Safari icon at the bottom of the screen, nothing happens. Now I have to quit Safari at the top and start all over again. This question has been asked here before and a reply was posted with step by step instructions on how to resolve the issue. I, along with several others, followed these steps with no success. Has anyone found an alternate solution?

Thank you for your reply. Either closing window, pressing Esc, or command-control-F gives me the same result. Safari disappears and I can't bring it back up.

The menu bar is still available at the top. If I go command-N, I exit youtube and go back to Google (my home screen). Still not ideal, but slightly less counterproductive than the alternative.
