unable to download music onto ipod shuffle

I have an Ipod shuffle 2nd generation that was given to me (so I'm not sure of there were any problems to begin with) and I'm unable to put music on it. I've tried restoring and auto filling playlists but nothing will work! there is also a message that pops up when i do try to auto fill that says it cant because the songs are already on there...but i know there aren't any song on the Ipod because the green and orange light flash whenever i press play

iPod shuffle, null

Hello peta221,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you were given an iPod shuffle and you are unable to put music on it. I recommend resetting the iPod shuffle and then try syncing your music to it again. The iPod shuffle Troubleshooting link below has the steps to reset it:

Apple - Support - iPod - iPod shuffle Troubleshooting

Reset

To reset your iPod shuffle:User uploaded file

  • 1. Eject your iPod shuffle from iTunes, if connected.
  • 2. Remove iPod shuffle from the USB port.
  • 3. Move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position.
  • Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible.
  • 4. Wait 5 seconds.
  • 5. Move the switch on the back to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position.
  • iPod shuffle is now reset. If after resetting iPod shuffle you are going to attach it to your computer, be sure to place the switch in the off position.
Best Regards.
