U3 System mounting with USB drive

Got a new 2.0gb Cruzer Titanium thumb drive, and a CD-icon U3 System mounts with it, containing Windows files. The Sandisk site makes no mention of how to not get it to mount on a Mac, and that getting it not to mount on a PC requires editing the registry.

My question is has the U3 System bothered anyone else enough to find a workaround it? I didn't know this hitchhiker came with the drive.

Thanks in advance.

I'm annoyed with it also and I contacted SanDisk about the issue. Their response was rude and unhelpful - they said I should find a Windows PC and remove it from there. I've searched Mac forums and the Internet to see if anyone has found a more reasonable solution but I couldn't find an answer (except other unhappy Mac users). If you find a solution, please post back. Thanks.

Have either of you tried reformatting it through disk utilities?
Disk Utilities>Select the drive (not the volume)>Partition>Options(button)> Select partition table according to your Mac>Format>Partition(button)

This should do the trick. Please let me know if this works.

And for Claire JR how long have you been using 10.4+ and when did you get the Maxtor Onetouch? Have been experiencing any odd behaviors with it? Does the button work? What is the partition scheme and format?

Hi dvdrums,

The same thing happened to me with a memorex brand. I emailed them and they told me pretty much the same thing as they told Claire JR ... they included a link to uninstall but I had to find a PC to do it on. It worked fine and I'm glad I did it, that U3 mounting everytime would have bothered me too.

I couldn't find a work-around.

Good luck 🙂

Hi Gulliver 🙂

Here is the exact message I received from memorex:

"You can download the U3 uninstaller program from U3.com and run it on a PC where you can load the U3 launchpad.

http://www.u3.com/uninstall/final.aspx

Or you can take it back to the store and replace it with a Mini TravelDrive with out the U3 software."

I just plugged in the USB thumbdrive and clicked the link and I believe I just followed whatever direction came up.

Good luck.

Whacked1,

I have the Maxtor OneTouch II a little over a year. I have it partitioned into two drives - a backup boot drive of about 100 GB and a data drive for the other 200 GB. I've only experienced a few problems with it. It gets very hot if it's running constantly for a long period of time so I contacted Maxtor. They said I shouldn't run it continuously for more than about 5 hours without giving it a rest. I have it set to sleep when it's inactive so I'm not having a heating problem now, but that, of course, defeats my boot drive purpose.

The second problem is related to it occasionally not being recognized correctly and not mounting on the desktop. But I've figured out the problem and solution. The Maxtor is connected to my external EZQuest drive (my boot drive) via firewire. To ensure that the Maxtor is recognized when the EZQuest boots, I have to first turn on the Maxtor and then wait until I can feel (with my hand) that it has warmed up sufficiently (it vibrates slightly) and then I can turn on my EZQuest. After that has warmed up, I turn on my Mini. I think the extra warm-up time is necessary because my apartment is cold in the winter and the drives seem to be affected by the cold as much as I am. The fan on the EZQuest drive groans at startup, and the EZQuest tech support told me to loosen the fan (that worked, although it still groans a little on very cold days).

I don't use the button, but I just tried it to see if it works and it doesn't.

Has anyone found a way to keep the U3 and still use
the thumb drive?
I have the same concern on a Verbatim drive and all
their technical support could say is that it is an
issue with OSX.
I use my drive, and the U3 programs, on Windows
machines when I am not at home. So removing that is
not an option.

TIA

Jeremy

Never mind, I found the concern in another post. It was that there was a password on the U3 section that would not allow the drive to fully mount.
