Safari url bar is dead

I'm on a 2014 Mac Air, updated to High Sierra (the bane of my life, the computer has never recovered). The problem is with Safari 11.0.3.

I don't know what's caused this new problem - it doesn't seem connected to any recent updates or other changes.

When I open a new Safari window, the default page should be Netflix. It's not - it's a set of icons for my few bookmarks.

User uploaded file

I enter an address into the url bar.

User uploaded file

I click Return. The end of the url is cut off; the window remains blank.

User uploaded file

There's no arrow or other obvious way to enter a url besides hitting Return, so I can't test alternatives.

Over to the left is a tab for Netflix.

User uploaded file

When I click on it, an episode of a Netflix series I haven't watched in about six months starts up, mid-episode.

I followed the advice I found in another thread here about Safari malfunctions:

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Did all that - restarted - no change. Safari is effectively dead.

One last factor: it seems like there's more than an "enter" arrow missing from the Safari screen, but I can't tell what. It just looks really empty.

I'd appreciate any advice!

Try Safari/Preferences/Advance to make sure Smart Search Field has Show full website address checked.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. Please post if this worked or not.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once. Please post if this worked or not.

Etrecheck – System Information

Feb 20, 2018 6:02 PM in response to Eric Root

Wow, that was in there five times!

I've done the following since my last check-in:

- removed all five from my login items.

- removed two apps from my Mac - one that recently updated itself, the second newly installed

- cleared out the Safari cache again, including history.db files.

No real change - except that the page populated with my Favorites as well as the four bookmarks.

But: I fixed it at last. Turned out that resetting the NVRAM and SMC did the trick! And finally - FINALLY - Safari is back to normal. It opens to my home page, no weird second tab with an ancient Netflix show - all is finally well.

Eric, I can't thank you enough for all the hand-holding. Even though I stumbled on the fix myself, this was really educational. And your patience has been heartening. You're the best!

Finally got to this! Thanks for the very clear instructions. I set up the new account, and Safari worked flawlessly. So I've downloaded Etrecheck.

Here's the report. Since I'm not entirely sure how this works, does it matter which problem I checked to start the analysis? Beachballing is an ongoing problem since the High Sierra upgrade, so I picked that one.

It appears to be 3rd party software that you are using. You have a lot of things installed that I don't recognize, so I'd be guessing. Try quitting everything but Safari and see if there is an improvement. If there is, open the applications one at a time and test.

Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.

This is interesting. I haven't had time to troubleshoot as you suggest, Eric. But when I opened Safari today, one thing has changed: the reload circular arrow has re-appeared on the right side of the address bar.

So when I enter a url and hit Return, it still doesn't do anything. If I follow that up by hitting the reload arrow, it does go to the site I want.

It's a two-step process instead of the usual single step, but at least Safari is usable now.

And you were right: under Preferences, the option to show the full address was unchecked. There ya go.

Maybe I just sit around everything will gradually heal itself. 😁

I see that occasionally. Some other things to try.

Safari can’t open a website

Safari – slow page loads

Safari - Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing

Web Content not responding

Eric, I closed everything and re-opened Safari. No joy - it's as screwed up as ever.

In your estimation, is it worth the time to delete one 3rd-party app after another to see if it fixes the problem? Or at this point is it a better investment of my time to visit the genius bar?

I do have one app in mind that I installed very shortly before the problem kicked up, so I'll dump that as an experiment. With so many others that have gotten along very happily with Safari up until now, I'm reluctant to start down that road.

Re that last point, I want to be sure I understand: do you get the impression Clean My Mac might be the culprit, or are you just advising in general that I get rid of it?

I really appreciate your sticking this out with me. Thanks very much.
