Why won’t my Apple Watch receive anything?

My series 3 Apple Watch won’t receive/load any messages or emails. It just started doing this today. It doesn’t show that I am not connected to my phone, nor does it show any other indication that it is malfunctioning. Even when I open iMessage on the watch it doesn’t show any new messages.
