If you and the friend both go to an Apple Store or official authorized Apple service provider

with the phone, they may (or not) be able to help you out. ~ IF the iPhone has an 'Activation

Lock' based on some action done without correct set-up -- to give or sell the iPhone, they

may be able to help resolve the issue. Proof of ownership (original bill/sale) may be needed.

Online, without much more information, that's the best I can do. Someone else may have

a go at trying to guess or suggest another path to try, which may or may not resolve this.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

IF the cellular service provider has looked into the phone directly and said

this issue is an Apple one, not theirs, the problem may be due to incorrect

preparation for a new user to set up the unit for another account.

And a new user of an Apple product such as this would require them to use

an Apple ID; to get their own and use it, if that isn't already in existence.

Usually ahead of handing off, giving, selling, an iOS Device where an AppleID

is involved (due to online activities, billings, and histories, etc) see this article:

{When you erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch,

Find My iPhone and Activation Lock is turned off.}

*When you tap 'Erase All Content and Settings', it completely erases your device, including any credit or debit cards you added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services. Your content won't be deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.

IF the issue with the iPhone isn't the cellular carrier's own lock (or proprietary SIM)

the problem may be an Activation Lock or other setup requirement before re-use.

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
