How to change timing of pictures and music

I am trying to change the duration of certain pictures to match my music track. However, when I do that, it freezes the picture and also screws up the track. Hard to explain. It's as if the music track is locked to the pictures.

Better to simply ask: How do I change the duration of pictures without it affecting the music track?

Hi, Skip,

The picture looks like it is "freezing" because you have inadvertently dragged out its duration to minutes instead of seconds. Put your cursor on the dragged out picture to check the duration and you will see what I mean. So, if you have a 4 second picture and you have dragged it out to 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds, the playhead will look like it has come to a stop and frozen as it plays through a 10 minute picture. Likewise the sound track below it will look like it has shrunk up. This can happen when your time line has been compressed to its minimum. In that instance when you start to drag out a picture the duration will jump to minutes instead of seconds. All you need to do is to expand your timeline by moving to the right the slider next to the Settings button at the right hand side of your screen just above the time line. Then when you drag out your picture it won't jump to minutes and the sound track will not be affected.

There are two ways to add music to an iMovie project. You can add the music just below the picture and it will attach to that picture with a green line as a connected clip. This means that any editing you do to photos in the timeline that cause the photo the music is connected to move then the music will move with it. The second way is to add the music to the music well at the bottom of the timeline window. Here it is independent of any edits you make to the video and you can move the music freely and edit it as you like. The best procedure for synching music to photos is to add the music into the well at the bottom. Then place markers on it where you want the photos to change. Then add the photos and edit them o align with your markers.
