Getting alerts on both Apple Watch and iPhone

Hi. I’ve just brought an Apple Watch 3 and separately upgraded to iPhone 8. I work in food manufacturing so cannot always wear my watch, have to have it in my pocket. Because of this I want to be able to receive text and call alerts on both the watch and the phone, but can’t work out how to achieve this. I’ve been told that once off my wrist and locked the watch should transfer alerts back to the phone, which would be ok, but mine isn’t doing this. Can anyone advise what settings I have wrong?

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul

How notifications behave depends on the status of your devices and your settings. With Wrist Detection enabled, in order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:

  • If your iPhone is unlocked, then you will receive notification alerts on your iPhone instead of on your Apple Watch.
  • If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your Apple Watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch display is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notification alerts on your watch.
  • If your Apple Watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, then notifications will go to your iPhone.
  • Alerts for incoming phone calls are delivered to both devices.

If alerts are not reverting to your iPhone after removing your Apple Watch, then it may help to:

Check that you have switched your Apple Watch to your new, separately upgraded iPhone:

Check that your Apple Watch is remaining locked after placing it in your pocket. Perhaps turn off the Unlock with iPhone option, in case your Apple Watch believes that it is being worn and is becoming unlocked following subsequent use of your iPhone:

  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Passcode:
  • Turn on each of Wrist Detection and Passcode, but turn off Unlock with iPhone.

Check that Do Not Disturb mode is not enabled on your iPhone and check your sounds and haptics settings:

If the issue persists, then you may wish to seek help from Apple, perhaps taking advantage of your initial 90 days of complimentary telephone-based technical support. Contact options include:
