where can I find Final Cut 10.3 now

Hi, I have an older 2008 MacPro 8 core 3,1 machine that I've had Final Cut 10.09 on Mavericks before the change to 10.1
I have installed a new boot drive in one of the 4 drive areas and installed El Capitan and updated to 10.11.6

If I purchase Final Cut now (Feb 2018) I only see Final Cut 10.4 which says it needs High Sierra to run.

Is there a way to purchase Final Cut 10.3 - and update to the latest 10.3 that will run in El Capitan on my machine

and stay there until I purchase a new machine when the MacPro version finally comes out in the next couple years.
I'm not going for the iMac or older MacPro black units. Mine runs really well and even in El Capitan it seems good to go.

So how do I purchase Final Cut 10.3?

thanks,

LG

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), (early 2008) 2.8GHZ 8core 18GB-RAM

You mention the word Purchase several times but you do not need to Pay again if you have already bought it.

Upgrades/Updates of FCPX have all been free.

Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple ID that you used to originally buy FCPX.

Go to your PURCHASED page.

Do you see FCPX listed on the purchased page?

If you do it should say Install, so click install.

It should then say something like ( from memory so bare with) OS 10.12. 2 or later is needed for latest version, but would you like to download an older version that is compatible with your current OS.

Say yes and you should get ver 10.3.4

All the above to be done from your El Capitan boot drive ,of course.

Regarding my post above.

I would have tried the procedure, above, of signing into the App Store with my Apple ID on a friend's or relative's

Mac, but they are not within easy reach.

So ,I contacted Apple Support today, and they confirmed that the method I have described above should work.

I can understand that if buying FCPX at 300 $/£ or Euros then one might be nervous, but Apple said it should be OK.

If you are doing this to obtain a free App like iMovie 10, then you have nothing to loose.

Note; you cannot access the App Store from any Mac in an Apple Store (Apple Shop), so no point going in to one to try this.

So, if you want to buy FCPX 10.3.4 (or download iMovie 10.1.6 )for El Capitan then this just might work for you.

Luis

A question for you, a little off track but it is related to above.

Can someone sign in to the App Store ,with their own Apple ID, on a Mac that belongs to a friend or relative and download apps such as FCPX or iMovie.

As you know Macs around 2009 and before can't run on later than OS El Capitan.

Some of these owners want to buy FCPX for the first time or even download iMovie 10 for the first time but cannot as they need Sierra or High Sierra which they can't run,or download.

In the iMovie forum there are iMovie ver 8 and 9 users who have upgraded to El Capitan by "invitation of Apple," who then discover that these iMovie versions don't work and also cannot upgrade to iMovie version 10 because they need

Sierra or High Sierra to download it.Hence no iMovie.

Back to the question.

The idea is to get iMovie 10 and/or FCPX ver 4 downloaded from the App Store using own ID on a friend's/ralatives

Mac that is running High Sierra or Sierra10.12.4.

This would enable the Apps to be registered on their own Purchased page.( not friend or relative)

These Apps could immediately be dragged to trash without installing and still appear in Purchased.

Now on their own Mac (El Capitan) they could download from the Purchased page in App Store these Apps

that are compatible with El Capitan.

Too crazy or do you think it would work.

Of course the answer to this would be for Apple to provide the appropriate download version in the first place for El Capitan users as the App Store knows the OS of the user.

Apple are turning away those who are prepared to buy FCPX 10.3.4 at $300 because they cannot go beyond El Capitan,, and some left with no iMovie .

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Did you actually try clicking Buy and did it tell you that you need to update the OS, or did you assume that is what would happen?

The reason I ask is because I know one can at least *download* the latest version compatible with the running OS -if you have already bought it.

I tried downloading to my previous mac (now used by my wife, so still appropriate for family sharing). This mac runs Yosemite and I was offered the chance to download 10.2.3, the latest compatible with the OS.

Two things of note, which may impend on the possibility of doing this: I had, of course, bought the software, and at a version which was earlier than the one I wanted to get.

Also, whilst this worked, I never had the chance to try the equivalent using El Capitan to get 10.3.4.

Hi Luis, I haven't tried it yet as I didn't want to charge a transaction to my credit card without knowing in advance if I'd get stuck in the twilight zone of having paid but not being able to use it. I do remember in the past trying to purchase something else and it just said it couldn't install on my computer and left me with no option to get an older version due to security reasons, I assume (a bank app). I had to purchase a newer phone as I couldn't access my bank via phone any longer. haha I can't do the same with my desktop, at least not right now.

Could I ask you how long ago you did that Yosemite download? and was the Yosemite compatible version an old version of just the last previous one. As I think, there are grey periods when you can still get the last version like when El Capitan went to Sierra. On the cusp you might have been able to get either or until some point where the older version is no longer officially supported. (kinda guessing here based on past experience and a little logical deduction, but can't say anthing really with 100% certainty, which is why I was posting to see if some really knew the answer with 100% certain, hahah) 😁
