error occurred during activation -iMessage on Mac

I am trying to use the iMessage function on my MacBook Air and it won't log in. The message "error occurred during activation" keeps coming up. It worked a few months ago, but after I updated my Mac it stopped working.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
