How can I find out if my Certified, refurbished i-Mac is still under Apple's 1-year warranty? I have the serial number, but not the original purchase date.

Just bought a used "Apple Certified/Refurbished" 27" iMac desktop from Amazon (third party vendor is 6ave - 6th Avenue Electronics). Make is MK 482LL/A, Model is A1419. I typed in the serial number, but don't have the original purchase date, so Apple's online system will not verify warranty status. Does anybody know if there is any other way to find out warranty status without having this date?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), quad-core 6th-gen Skylake 3.3GHz

Thanks, babowa. That is the same link I already tried. After you enter your serial number, it takes you to the next screen that asks you to enter the original purchase date. Of course, I don't have that. I will contact the seller, but I doubt they will have it or give it to me. They haven't been that forthcoming with information so far. When I went into my local Apple Store for a different Apple product, they were able to tell me the original purchase date, so I bet if I just call Apple, I can get that information. If I can't get this resolved in the next day or two, I will return it. I have 10 days to return to Amazon, UNOPENED, for full refund. I can't jeopardize wasting time, as Amazon is very strict with their deadlines for returns. I learned that the hard way on an i-phone that was sold as NEW and turned out to be used and out of warranty (same item I took into my local Apple store) and stopped working after 2 months. Amazon basically told me to go fly a kite. I didn't know until last week, after this i-Mac was on it's way to me, that I could buy a used one on the Apple store. That's what I will do next if I end up returning this one.

Any other ideas, short of calling Apple?

If you have never opened and registered the iMac with Apple,

they have no clue if it was ever sold or even still exists.

Looks as though you you are in a Catch-22 situation.

So, even if you had a purchase date, you still not find what you are

looking for. You could try I guess.

If you purchased with a credit card, you should be able to log into

the card provider's site and search for the transaction?

FWIW, except for items purchased directly from Apple, there is no requirement

what so ever for vendors to report an Apple product purchase which is pretty

much true of anything you buy from anyone.

Well, I was in a thread here a few days ago where someone else was about to purchase a "certified refurbished by Apple" product from the same vendor through Amazon. Even though someone claimed that this vendor was selling products refurbished by Apple, I do not believe it because I have not seen anything myself that anyone besides Apple is allowed to do so. They often sell items they refurbished, but that is not the same thing. And, I could find nothing on 6ave's site that they are an authorized reseller.

I'd say caution is advised; it would be best to call Apple, give them the serial number and explain the vendor's claims - whatever you find out, please do post it here so everyone can benefit from the information. You might also contact Amazon and/or 6ave and ask them as well. Personally, I'd never buy a Mac from anyone that isn't local (except for Apple).

FWIW, I believe your model is a 2015 so it could have been sold anytime thereafter.

I do have my purchase date on my Amazon receipt, but it sounds like what you are saying is that if the original purchaser never registered this product with Apple, then they wouldn't have any information to tell me what the original purchase date was. When I bought a used i-phone 6 months ago, it had a battery failure; when I took it into the Apple store, they were able to print out a sheet for me showing the original purchase date and that the warranty had expired over a year earlier. From what you are saying, that i-phone must have been registered with Apple when it was originally sold. This all makes sense to me now.

As far as this iMac desktop, it's still sitting in the box. I am planning to return it. I have written the seller, through Amazon, 4 times now and the seller does not respond to my specific questions - just gives me unrelated responses, like "we hope you are happy with your experience so far" and "please be advised, the information you want will be available when you receive your product" and "would you complete seller feedback to help other customers?" Such B.S.

Thanks for your response. It was helpful.

That post a few days ago was from me. I am now in receipt of the iMac desktop. Please see my reply to woodmeister50 for other information.

It's the vendor's listing in Amazon that states, verbatim, the used iMac is "Apple MK482LL/A Apple Certified Pre-Owned unit that is fully tested and certified by Apple to look and work like new. All Certified Pre-Owned units come with a full one-year Apple warrant and can be repaired online or via any Apple store across the nation. In addition, all units are eligible for AppleCare add-on protection directly via Apple if you want to extend the product's warranty period. The certification prcess includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, insection and re-packaging. ...... Only sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com." Later in the listing under "Warranty, Labor", Amazon also states in the first sentence "1 Year Apple Manufacturer Warranty", but then goes on to say "New, used, and refurbished products purchased from Marketplace vendors are subject to the returns policy of the individual vendor." This is one of the questions I have asked now in 3 emails to the vendor - What is your Return/Refund policy?" To which I have yet to receive a response. Dare I open up the box to see if there is something in writing that addresses all of this?

I looked on Apple's site - on their list of authorized dealers for sales and repair, and I did not find 6ave on it. They are in Somerset, New Jersey. I also looked at iMac listings on their own web site and did not see any used listings that made these claims. I'm thinking that they maybe just do this on their Amazon listings, but they have a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Am I one of only a few buyers out there that concern themselves with these issues? It's only because I got burned 6 months ago on my purchase of a used iphone that was listed as "NEW", and by the time I found out and got the paperwork into Amazon (after wasting time with B.S. emails back and forth with the seller), the seller and Amazon refused to help me and NEVER addressed the real issue of a vendor selling used electronics as NEW at new prices!!!

I agree with your statement "caution is advised". I will also do as you suggest and call Apple to see what I can find out before I ship it back.

I'm afraid that my long, happy relationship with Amazon is nearing it's end.

I will post the results of my additional research, as you suggest. Thanks much.

You might also want to ask Apple if they allow anyone but themselves to sell certified refurbished devices. And, whenever I want info like that, I prefer having their answer in writing, so I will initiate a chat with their support and then do a screenshot of the conversation or get it emailed to me (if available) - I prefer having such information in writing with names/dates/etc. That way I can prove my point if necessary. Phone conversations can easily turn into a "he said > she said" situation.

Now, since Amazon is an authorized reseller, the claim for the warranties, etc. may be ok/legit (I do not know that for a fact, but would ask Apple and Amazon if needed); however, this seller is not Amazon and not an authorized reseller. I've been (nearly) burned several times (sellers did try, but I prevailed) with those types of claims, so I tend to not believe much of anything a seller claims unless I get it in writing and confirmed by Apple. More so if they do not answer my specific questions promptly.

And no, you're not the only one concerned about these issues - so am I.

Personally, I prefer buying my refurbs directly from Apple - I did buy an iMac once from a local seller, but that unit was still within the first year of warranty (I checked), it was in perfect shape and a good price, so that was a no brainer. FYI, if you're looking on Apple's refurb site and want a particular model: check several times a day as the inventory changes rapidly - there's only usually one of everything; I once waited 3 months for a particular model - once it finally showed up, I hit the buy button immediately.

Well, this got more interesting. I had my phone appt. with APPLE TODAY. Got referred to their Agreements Dept. Yvonne looked up my Serial # and told me that there is no purchase history, but system shows that the one-year warranty began Dec. 26, 2017 and expires 12/25/2018 AND IS ELIGIBLE for APPLECARE!!! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. I asked if 12/26/17 was original purchase date and again she said there is no purchase date, but the serial # brought up the above info. and that's what they go by. I immediately bought the 3 yr. AppleCare+ plan, which is good until 12/25/20 for $169. I even questioned the seller not being on their authorized list and she again responded that whatever comes up when they enter the serial # is what they go by. Maybe there is some type of arrangement that Amazon has given that they are authorized. Anyway, my fears are all gone. I've received the documentation via e-mail and I am typing this reply on my "Certified" not-so-used iMac and I am at peace with the world.🙂

I am looking for a used, but recent, Mac Book Pro to give my daughter for high school graduation. She'll be starting college in the Fall and her old one is limping along. She's worked hard and is graduating early with a 3.7 GPA, so she sure deserves and needs an upgrade. No more Amazon or eBay. I will be buying it from the Apple Store.

Hey, babowa, I've learned a lot from you. Thank you.

Feb 21, 2018 8:42 AM in response to Mycrazyiphone

I'm glad to hear all of that and thanks for posting an update. That is indeed interesting - there must be an agreement somewhere, but Apple isn't acknowledging that or they would be on the authorized list and/or advertising that on their site (which would be an excellent selling point) ...... not sure that that is the right way to approach this, but it is what it is. Personally, although I know this now - at least for that one seller - I would not buy anything there.

Good luck in finding the one you want at the Apple refurb site.
