I experience the following problem: I have a huge number of documents in txt format and in the Greek language, created in the past several years in windows ( various versions from 1998 till present, Windows 10). I use spotlight to search within them but spotlight does not recognise automatically their font so it does not search them. I have to convert each and every one of them to a recognisable by the spotlight font and save it, in order spotlight to perform searching by content. Of course I cannot do this as the number of them is huge, actually more than 80,000. How can I solve this problem please? I use a MacBook Pro and Mac OS high Sierra. Thank you.

MacBook Air, iOS 10.3.3

Thanks for the txt doc. It seems to be encoded as Win 1253. I think you need to find a way to batch convert your docs to Unicode UTF-8. I don’t know of any Mac apps to do this in large numbers like you have. There are some windows apps — perhaps you can find a service or a colleague who could do it for you. For example

PS Are you running your MacOS in Greek or English? If English, you could try switching the OS to Greek and see if Spotlight behaves differently (a long shot but worth a try maybe).

PSS If you are comfortable with Terminal commands, the answer by Anthony O in the middle of this page

may work on a Mac (change 1252 to 1253), but I have never tried it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question . I Don't know what is the conversion process you are talking about, as I am not a technician. The problem is that when I asked the Apple's official service here in Athens, they didn't have a clue either! May I ask you to suggest me what to tell to these guys to check? thank you very much for your time!

You said earlier "I have to convert each and every one of them to a recognisable by the spotlight font and save it". What exactly did you mean by that? Describe for me how are you are converting your documents to a new font, and provide the name of the new font and the name of the old one.

I open each file with textedit, then I mark all of its text (cmd-A), I select Format from the menu in textedit and choose Font and then I choose Kern - use default and finally save and replace the file with text edit. Thereafter the file is indexed normally by spotlight and it is searchable. I don't know the name of the old font. Actually all I can see is a string of meaningless characters i.e.
