How do you stop tapu find?

Every two to three minutes a fake pop-up shows up trying to get me to install an extension called Tapu Find. I don't know how to get it to stop doing that. Is there any way I can stop this without downloading any apps? If not, is there any other way I can get it to stop? Thanks.

This is the only thing that worked for me:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Copy/paste:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
  3. Press return
  4. Hold the ‘Option/alt’ key, then right click on the Finder icon in the dock and click Relaunch
  5. Navigate to: /Users/yourmacname/Library/Application Support/
  6. Delete Folder: Agent
  7. Go back to Terminal and copy/paste:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
  8. Press return
  9. Hold the ‘Option/alt’ key, then right click on the Finder icon in the dock and click Relaunch

Voila.

Note: This is nasty Chill-Tab adware infection.

If you do not want to download an app, please ignore the following.

Chill-Tab

You will have to do this after starting up in Safe Mode to prevent adware

from interfering with the removal of adware .

1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

Enter this address https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

in the Safari address bar.

Download, Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan” button to remove adware, if present.

Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

2. Turnoff or uninstall extensions that you have not installed knowingly.

Section: Manage extensions: https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/use-safari-extensions-sfri32508/mac

3. Choose a search engine.

Delete all text in the Smart Search field, click the magnifying glass , then choose a search engine from the list.

4. Set your Home Page. https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/set-your-homepage-ibrw1020/mac

5. Restart your Mac.

6. Launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

Hi Rozaly et al,

Antivirus/Malware programs won't work, and deleting extensions etc. in your browser is only treating the symptoms as it will always come back. The only way to remove the disease is to delete the hidden Agent folder as I've described above. You should still clean up your browser etc, but not before deleting that folder.

I do NOT recommend downloading and installing any software that claims to rid this from your system, especially since it's so easy to do on your own. I learned the hard way, just trying to save you some grief.

Bob,

I am a first time dicussion poster. I am having trouble removing tapufind. I am running 10.12.6 I followed your instructions (even erroneously tried to navigate to the Application Support folder from within Terminal) but I did not have an Agents folder in /Users/myname/Library/Application Support. Do you have any suggestions for me?

That is your home/user folder. If it isn't in the Finder Sidebar, go to Finder/Preferences/Sidebar/Favorites and check the last item.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library.

or

In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library.

Bigcove, I think I don't have the full blown virus; no pop-ups at all. Basically I just noticed that when I searched for something, it was no longer a google search but a Tapufind Yahoo! search. The screen just looked weird. Then I noticed on the touch bar had "Search Tapufind" instead of the normal google search. I just changed the default search engine back to google. I'm sure something else needs to be fixed; I didn't change my search engine. But for now the things that had changed are no longer an issue for me.
