FB Messenger will not open on Apple Watch

Facebook Messenger starts, and spins, and spins, and spins until it eventually crashes.

I've tried:

  1. rebooting watch
  2. rebooting phone
  3. upgrading WatchOS
  4. uninstalling Messenger from watch, rebooting both, installing again
  5. uninstalling Messenger from phone, rebooting both, installing again
  6. changing a reply in the Apple Watch section of Messenger Settings on the phone

This order worked for me!

  • Open the Messenger app on your phone
  • Go to Settings (tap on the upper-left picture to load the Settings Menu)
  • Tap on Apple Watch
  • Change one of the default replies to anything and close the app (double press Home and swipe up on Messenger app preview to close)
  • Open Messenger > Settings > Apple Watch again and delete that entry you just changed
  • Close the app again (double press Home and swipe up on Messenger app preview to close)
  • Good luck!

I can also confirm that the workaround no longer works with the latest releases. Though the Messanger app for Apple Watch still downloads and installs onto Series 3 and the lates watchOS, the app simply hangs and never loads, no matter what fixes are applied. It simply doesn't function.

The only time I am able to interact with FB messages at all on Watch is when they initially come in, by responding to the notification — but this is a feature of Notifications and not of the app (which doesn't need to be installed at all in order to do this). But the app itself never works, so you cannot initiate messages, view older messages, etc.

If it has been ‘pulled’ as you suggest then Apple need to get it off the Watch App Store (as an ‘editor’s choice’ 😂) and not offer something that is a blatant fail. I know it’s not an Apple app - but they have a responsibility as well - to stop dangling in front of our faces in order that we end up here - on this forum - moaning as we all are out of frustration, anger and impotence because NEITHER Apple NOR Facebook will fix it or genuinely ‘pull it’.

Updated Messenger on iPhone yesterday (22/06/2018) and Messenger is back and working on Apple Watch!! No fixes or tricks - it just worked. Beware - tap on a chat and you will (or may) get the revolving wheel of death - but eventually they load. They can also be slow to update - but let’s hope there will be fixes in future updates for speed. It seems that at last users were listened to. My thumbs were bleeding from the number of ‘problem reports’ I sent. Phew.

That's weird - mine is, as I write, still working. It can take time to update I'll admit and they need to work on it - a lot!! I've found a 'chat' gives it a kick start - past and inactive chats are not loading - but a chat I'm currently having is updating fine ....... maybe ask someone to send a message, see if it gets it moving. Sorry you're having problems though. As I say - it's far from perfect but, for me, right now, it's working......

For a moment I thought there was hope but... I wouldn't say the app is working. Some functions do, it's still not usable though. I guess that the latest Messenger update accidentally messed with the code allowing the watch app to work again. Sometimes conversations load, sometimes they do not. Even if they do, it takes forever. The core of the issue is that the majority of Messenger community isn't using Apple Watch. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think they really started fixing the app. I think that Facebook employees have other issues at hand to work on and we won't be getting a fix any time soon. I don't think many Apple Watch users have really reported anything, and so it is.
