iOS 11.3 - Delete Message Confirmation

The newest iOS 11.3 update enables a feature that asks if you're sure you want to delete a text message/iMessage once you choose the delete option. It's making me crazy! I tried searching through the settings to remove this deletion confirmation, but can't find anything on the topic. Is there any way to remove this feature?

Every so often Apple comes up with a "Feature" that so small and so annoying that begs the question as to whether they ever consult with a user. YES! Delete confirmation is an unnecessary addition to IOS and we can only hope that some security patch will remove it

No, Apple doesn't consult with users. Instead, they see what users do with their phones and often introduce features based on what they perceive as a real need. This is one such feature. Daily, multiple users come here to these user only forums begging for help to recover an accidentally deleted text message. In most cases, the only way to get the message back is to restore from backup, which often people simply don't have.

So, this very small change was introduced to help the countless thousands of users to ensure when they use swipe to delete that they truly do want to delete the message.

Are you aware there is another simple method to delete messages that will not ask you to confirm you want to delete? Yes, Apple provided the best of BOTH worlds to users. Simply use the Edit/Tap Messages(s)/Tap Trash icon and voila, message(s) delete without confirmation. That can't be any more cumbersome could it? It's three steps, just like it was before on swipe to delete.

we can only hope that some security patch will remove it

And you can further this goal by sending feedback to the PROPER destination which is found by READING through this conversation instead of "me too'ing".

That you did not read any of the 34 pages of this conversation?

Come on apple don’t treat us like idiots, sure add confirmation clicks but make them optional.

First - Apple is not here, so there is no point in addressing them

Second - No one is treating anyone like idiots. People are human. They make mistakes. The swipe to delete function had no forgiveness clause. Just because someone makes a mistake doesn't make them an idiot, and we get several posts every single day with people begging us to provide them with a way to retrieve the messages that they accidently deleted. Since neither you, nor any of us know what Apple's design plans are regarding iCloud and Messages, we cannot know if this is a piece of that evolution. If you don't want to deal with the confirmation, then delete your messages by using the Edit button.

All of this information has been written multiple times in the 35 pages of this thread. Perhaps next time it would be a good idea to at least scan the thread you are going to post to before you post.

Huge setback! Requires you either use the alternate method for deleting, or the exhausting nano-second tap to confirm. I don't know how you are going to survive this betrayal of all that is sacred.

But, in the meantime, tell Apple: Apple - Feedback. Don't waste your time with a mindless "me too" post here. We don't care. We are users just like you, and we see both sides of the argument. There are huge numbers of people who are delighted that they can't just carelessly swipe away something that is critically important to them by accident.

I agree totally! This is the stupidist idea Apple ever had. Why would I want to tap three confirmations of my desire to delete a text? Please Apple! Wake up! Put it back like it was! One swipe is enough for a delete!

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple is not reading here for suggestions. Please use the feedback page if you want them to know your opinion:

GB, the fantasy world is TODAY'S REALITY

and usability is important. Apple is the king of usability, and adding such a feature that takes 3 steps to delete a message, for every message, assuming you have maybe 20+ is a pain in the butt. It's not a matter of hiding them. I want to remove them so they don't clutter up my phone with stuff I don't need. Just like I clean up my email box where you can simply select a bunch and delete them without confirmation. I also don't care if fellow users care about my post. I was looking for information and selected the "I have that problem too" selection, which is an option here for a reason. Many Apple experts and/or employees monitor this group, provide answers to users, and report back to apple on possible improvements. If you find it useless, then don't come on here just to chastise people. We're looking for solutions and sharing information.

I don't know how many more times we can explain to you that there is an alternative method which is far faster. On the messages list tap on EDIT. Then tap in the circle in front of the 20+ messages you have and then tap on the Trash can. I will continue to let you and anyone else who doesn't bother to read even a few posts on the thread they come to to complain that we just don't really care about how inconvenienced you are about such an unimportant change, that in the scheme if things is simply a tempest in a teapot. There are no solutions here with one exception - TELL APPLE: Apple - Feedback

Stop wasting your time and ours by complaining here. It serves absolutely no purpose.

Apple isn't reading here. So, if you want Apple to consider your opinion, you'll need to use the feedback page:

Sure would. If they ask you how to get the message back what advice would you give them?

Your best and only hope is that Apple will provide an option to turn off the confirmation.

If you are deleting 100 texts per day this extra step is costing you about 50 seconds. I'm guessing you don't really save any message threads?

May 3, 2018 4:47 PM in response to ericole

you are a crazy person to voice your opinion here or to complain.

Now you are proving you make up facts to further your childish ranting.

I *defy* you to find anybody here calling anybody else crazy. Go ahead.

You wore out your credibility long ago.

Most everyone else that finds this threat hates the change and merely wants one thing - for Apple to provide an option to turn it off so it will work the way it did before. 😉

And as has been said to you in the plainest English possible.... that can't and won't happen here.

The original question was a technical one. "Is there a way to remove this feature?"

The technical and correct answer is no.

Everything else is futile. There is nothing remotely constructive about "me too". Or saying please 133 times. Or continuing to moan about usability.

I guess it's time to go with a competitor

What competitor were you thinking of going to? Android phones have always required a second confirmation for deleting messages. Apple has finally caught up with it.

And let's also add that the deletion of text messages on a Pixel also requires the user to confirm the deletion. Here's their process:

To delete a single text message from a Google Pixel Phone

Tap “Messages” application

Open the conversation in which you want to delete a text message

Find the text itself, and press your finger on it until a message box appears

Select “Delete”

You then have a confirmation box that opens asking you if you really want to delete that text

Tap on “delete” again. Your text message is now deleted

This would make confirming a text deletion a more universal procedure now, regardless of brand.
