iOS 11.3 - Delete Message Confirmation

The newest iOS 11.3 update enables a feature that asks if you're sure you want to delete a text message/iMessage once you choose the delete option. It's making me crazy! I tried searching through the settings to remove this deletion confirmation, but can't find anything on the topic. Is there any way to remove this feature?

I'm glad to see a community that hates this feature as much as I do as well.

Not sure the 1000s of community members hate it as much as the dozens of short attention span visitors who come here with a single "me-too" contribution, and not understanding that those 1000s of community members aren't affected by their short-sighted and myopic opinions.

I just spoke to Apple tech support and they said this is not an issue with series 3. Why wouldn't they fix it for all series I stead of just the newer one. That's *****.

Either the person who told you that made a mistake or you misunderstood. iCloud message syncing is only available (at the time of this writing) for iPads, iPhones and Macs. See Apple's own support document:

And you are taking this way to personal. Chill today will end and tomorrow will come. Is there a solution to the problem that I didn’t see? I’m not going to read through 90 pages of forum to find the solution.

Apple did this to help the literally THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of posters who are not as perfect as you. People come here daily begging us to find a path back to a very important text message. Unless they backed up before they deleted the message, there is no path. So Apple, like Android has done since day one, finally made the decision to ensure people get a warning to confirm they really do want to delete a message. Smart.

But here's your solution. If you don't like the confirm to delete, you can bypass this altogether (which you'd have learned had you read this thread) by choosing Edit as opposed to swiping to delete. Tap Edit, then tap the circle on the left, then the trash can. Voila, message deleted without the need to confirm.

Well that wasn't very inclusive of you IdrisSeabright. Perhaps you might consider that the more people that complain, the more likely the big A will do something.

The only Apple employees reading these posts on a regular basis are the forum hosts. They read the posts to make sure they don't violate the terms of use. That's all they have time to do. Apple has created a specific place for you to provide feedback:

If you want to Apple seeing "more people" complaining, then follow the advice given over and over and over again - tell Apple, and stop wasting our time: Apple - Feedback.

If you are using iCloud Syncing for Messages, those messages are gone. There is no way to get them back.

If you are not using syncing and you have a back up that contains the messages, you can restore your phone from that back up. Note that doing so will overwrite everything currently on the phone.

To those who (like the last poster who's post was in violation of the TOU for this forum, thus the post was removed) say they are going Android. You can go Android if you want and honestly, none of us actually care if you do. Since I didn't really know how Android handles text deletion, I thought it would be interesting to see. This is the process on an Android phone:

Delete Messages - Android® Smartphone

  1. Tap the Message+ icon . If not available, navigate: Apps > Message+.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Touch and hold a message.
  4. Tap Delete Messages.
  5. Select additional messages if desired. ...
  6. Tap Delete (located in upper-right).
  7. Tap Delete to confirm.

So feel free to move to Android, but it won't be any different there as Apple finally provided this function, when it should have been there all along.

Of course this is probably what drove this little nugget. I can only imagine someone having a meltdown at a club after inadvertently deleting that text they wanted to save forever.

And probably someone who had some pull got it into the development cycle without any attention to UX, despite the fact it is wholly inconsistent behavior with at least three apps (and that's without looking for any others), and extremely poor behavior.

  • Visual voicemail
  • Notes
  • Mail

Add it as an option like they do in Mail, or perhaps let people have a 'keep deleted messages for x days' or 'delete immediately' option in prefs.

But no, someone had some pull. More than anything it's THIS that feels like Android.

If you took the time (which you didn't) to read the thread, you'd see:

  1. A link to let Apple know what you think was provided
  2. This is a user to user only forum, so telling us what you think is pointless
  3. The reason Apple did this was to help the many many many people who accidentally delete text messages EVERY day and to the forum to ask us regulars how they can get them back (most of the time, they can't). And yes, I along with most the people who are here daily helping these people think this is great and was much needed.
  4. You don't have to use the swipe to delete a text message, thus you can avoid the confirmation

You can express your opinion. I certainly did, but for very valid reasons. I think helping people is a good thing, which is why I spend a lot of time helping users with real problems. I hardly think having to confirm (again ONLY if you use swipe to delete) you want to delete a text message is such a horrible thing for most people. And yes, Android has always made you do this.

I must admit this thread has gotten my ire the most of all threads. And that's because (you're not alone) people like you who have never posted on the forum, who likely just joined because you want to agree you don't like this one new featuer, who will likely never try to help others (the real purpose of these discussion forums) and who couldn't be bothered to read past the first post to see if maybe there is some reason they could learn about a new feature and how it might benefit anyone. That doesn't mean you have to like it. Just understand there are other people on this planet who also have needs and maybe, just maybe, this will help them.

So, rmbohnhoff, this is why I said it's a much needed feature.

Apr 18, 2018 7:46 AM in response to nonameavaolable

I'm actually on a time out, but just felt I could help you.

Based on the number of text messages you're deleting, I propose you're doing it a way that takes more time, even if there wasn't a confirm to delete. Given the way you're doing it, you would:

  1. Open Message App
  2. Swipe Left on Message
  3. Tap Delete
  4. Repeat for each message

This way would be much faster and there is NO confirm to delete, because Apple provided the best of both worlds for folks, just like you.

  1. Open Message App
  2. Tap Edit
  3. Mark all messages you want to delete (no need to swipe anything and you can mark multiple messages at once)
  4. Tap Delete and there is no confirm to delete and voila, all selected messages are deleted
