Nikon Capture NX2 crashes

Hi to all!

I'm addicted to NX2, so don't tell me so start using Lightroom.

I've been having regular crashes with NX2 (on image opening or saving) since I've updated to Yosemite some time ago. I'm trying to find a solution to that annoying behaviour.

Get rid of the .SM.gul files

Uninstall NX2

Trash all NX2 system files and folders (things such as plists , cashes etc.)

Re install NX2

I did execute that command in Terminal (sudo find / -name ".SM.gui*" -delete). I still get crashes.

My problem is that I'm stuck with NX2 2.4.6 version because I found a hack that allow me to use NX2 with my Nikon D750, and this hack works only with 2.4.6 NX2 version.

2.4.6 version won't install (new install) on Yosemite, so I can't uninstall and reinstall like suggested.

Does anyone can help me? That would be such a relief.

It's a Nikon app so your best bet for support is Nikon. However as a Nikon owner I also have it installed on my iMac running High Sierra 10.13.3, it runs fine as of yesterday. What I'd suggest first is to post an EtreCheck report so we can look for anything obvious. Instructions are below. If that checks out okay then navigate to Nikon's website and look to see what the most current release is. I recall they did update recently.

Please post an EtreCheckreport of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it as your reply to this post.

One of the problems with both of these apps is they leave remnants when they are not uninstalled correctly. These remnants can cause problems such as what you are experiencing. The only solution is to re-install and then immediately uninstall or to do an erase and install and start over.

There is a link in the EtreCheck report to get rid of any Oprhan files, please use that if it senses any. If none are located in the report then I'd recommend following the instructions I just mentioned.

Well there are some major issues with what is installed on your computer. Mac OS is extremely secure and only needs to be kept up-to-date to remain so. It does not benefit or require ANY third party "maintenance" apps such as antivirus, cleaning or any other similar apps.

Your system first has some adware installed, restart the EtreCheck report and you will find a link inside to remove the adware.

Next, I see evidence of CleanMyMac installed, this is considered malware by experienced users. Locate the developers uninstall instructions and please uninstall. You also have MacKeeper installed, same thing (considered malware) please uninstall.

I also see you have a Torrent installed, some users use this to download software they have not paid for. This comes with a severe risk, introducing other malware into your system. I'm not saying that is you, however if it is, consider the consequences before using a Torrent. At the very least, uninstall it.

Finally, I see you have LittleSnitch installed, years ago this used to be a useful utility however a) it's no longer really necessary and b) it has had some reports of creating conflicts. Consider uninstalling it.

Seems to me like it might be a good time to break the old habit and move on. If ViewNX-i (which supports both macOS and your camera) is not what you had in mind, then perhaps it's time to give Apple Photos a fair test run.

Optionally if you must have your NX2 fix, then you could

1. run a dual boot or parallel system. (one that will boot or run both the older OS X and newer macOS)

2. use two Mac's. (one for your outdated imaging software and one that is up to date for everyday use)

In some ways I know exactly how you feel. Personally I used iPhoto for so long to manage images from my Nikon, Canon and other cameras, that the new Photos didn't feel right at first.

It's annoying because some people run it with no problem on Yosemite and newer OS. Something went wrong when I updated to Yosemite. It all started then.

I have another version of NX2 (still 2.4.6) on my MacBook Pro (Mavericks) that works fine... I took all the files NX2, moved/replaced them to my iMac, and I still got those crashes (no crashes on the MacBook)... so that's why I've posted here, it tells me that the problem is in the OS, and not in the application.

Get it cleaned up following rkaufmann87's advise and see if that helps.
