Apple Pay with Canadian credit card not accepted at most US retailers

I have no problem using my Canadian credit cards registered with Apple Pay in most foreign countries - eg Australia, NZ, UK. But in the weird world of US banks and credit, most retailers will not accept Apple Pay payments using Canadian cards. The only exception I have found to date is Walgreens. Hey Apple, you're missing out on lots of transactions in the USA!
