garageband 6.0.5

Hi All,

I am (still) running Lion 10.7.5 on a 2009 Mac Mini and using Garageband 6.0.5 to record with as a barebones DAW, I've got a ton of sessions over the years using the plugins, synths, loops, etc that came with garageband 6.0.5 and I want to keep these sessions completely intact because some of it is still work in progress. At the same time, I need to upgrade to El Capitan for my dayjob. Can I run 6.0.5 in El Capitan? How messed up will my precious sessions be if I am using the latest garageband to open them? Are the synth patches and plugins pretty much the same or should I expect to encounter some wonky stuff? I've had some unpleasant surprises before.

Please help, this is kind of keeping me up at night! 😀

Thanks!

Phil

Yes, GarageBand 6.0.5 will run on El Capitan. I am still using it on macOS 10.13.3 High Sierra.

When you upgrade to El Capitan, leave GarageBand 6.0.5 installed. GarageBand 10 can use the instruments and loops installed by GarageBand 6.0.5, both versions are sharing the sound library. You can keep both versions installed in parallel to be able to explore GarageBand 10. I would not convert your "Work in progress" to GarageBand 10, however. Use it only for new projects. If you open older projects in GarageBand 10, create a copy to save the old version.

GarageBand 10 is very different. Podcasts, ducking, the sound effects instruments no longer work. Older VST plugins may not work as well.
