How do I delete Dropbox from Mac

How can I delete Dropbox from Mac? The Dropbox shows on Finder, on the top of the sidebar. I dragged it to trash can but didn’t work. I tried all the recommendations from previous tips including checking the extension, etc. But none works for me. Please help. It takes up all the space in my Mac. Thanks!

Mac mini, iOS 10.3.2

Did you go into your Dropbox settings to select which files get synced to your Mac? You can leave stuff on the server that is not on your Mac. You can upload big files to Dropbox using a browser rather than through the Dropbox sync folder, and then in your local settings, just set those big files to NOT be synced locally. Dropbox does not have to take up a ton of space on your hard drive.

Let's go over these instructions.

Uninstall the desktop app on Mac OS X

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
I don't have the dropbox icon in the menu bar either. That's because I stopped Dropbox from starting each time my machine boots. If I want to run dropbox. I have to start dropbox manually. [ Don't recommend this. So, If you want to follow these instructions, you will have to manually start dropbox. ]
  2. Click the gear icon and select Preferences...
  3. Select the Account tab.
  4. Click Unlink this Dropbox...
I have not idea what this does. I'm guessing it stops dropbox from autostarting. This seems to be the only effective instructions to the running dropbox.
  5. Click the Dropbox icon from the menu bar again.
  6. Click the gear icon and select Quit Dropbox.
  7. Open the Applications folder in Finder.
  8. Drag the Dropbox app file from Applications to the Trash.

It would seem if dropbox is not autostarting, you need only to do steps 7 & 8.

Dropbox has not always made those settings as obvious as they (IMHO) should be. The options for selective syncing used to be under Accounts; elsewhere in the current version. I have a 1TB account, and obviously don’t want to sync everything to my laptops’ 1TB drives, or to other smaller HDs. I use the web interface more than the sync folder for remote backup of large files. This now the only way to transfer files from a Snow Leopard drive, since the Dropbox client no longer supports that OS.
