AirPods picking up background noise

I have a pair of AirPods and use them frequently to chat with friends while I go on walks. However, they pick up background noise making it next to impossible to hold a conversation even with the slightest of breeze... I have to sit perfectly still inside my house in order for them to make out what I am saying. ANY background noise seems to overpower my voice....

Any way to fix this?

Hello, drewkari14.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that your AirPods are picking up a lot of background noises. I do have a suggestion that may help. I would try seeing if unpairing/pairing your AirPods will help. Here's a link just in case: Get help with your AirPods
  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the icon next to your AirPods.1 Then tap Forget This Device.
  2. Put your AirPods in the case and close the lid. Wait 15 seconds, then open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until you see the status light flash amber a few times, then flash white.
  4. Place your AirPods close to your device. Follow the steps on your iOS device's screen.
I would also suggest seeing if the same thing happens if you use them on another device: Use your AirPods

Set up your AirPods with other devices

The first time you set up your AirPods with an iPhone with iOS 10, follow the steps above.

To set up your AirPods with a non-Apple device or a device that isn't logged in to your iCloud account, follow these steps:

  1. Put your AirPods in the case.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until you see the status light flash white.
  4. Follow the steps to set up a Bluetooth device with your iPhone or iPod touch, Mac, or Apple TV (4th generation).
If neither of these helped, then Contact Apple Support .
