Mark email as read if it is moved to trash

On my iphone 5S, I often delete emails without opening them. When I then work on my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.9.5), these emails are marked as unread in the Mail application and the Mail symbol in the toolbar shows a notification. This behavior is annoying. Is there a way to mark an email as read upon moving it to trash? Maybe there are alternative solutions?
