How do I know if I have a Gen 1 or Gen 2?

How do I know if I have a 1st generation AppleTV or a later one? The serial number probably tells it, but what numbers will no longer be supported? Thx.

A Gen 1 is a large white box. It looks a lot like a Mac Mini. Generations 2, 3 and 4 are much smaller and black.
