Changing apple ID

I set up my husbands computer with my apple ID. Now that he is (finally) getting an iphone, I need us to have different IDs. Since he used my ID to buy a bunch of music from itunes, I figure it's best to let him keep it and get a new one for me. But I don't want to lose all my data - contacts, photos, calendars, kindle downloads, and especially keychains. I have that ID on my mac, my phone and my ipad.

What do I have to do to protect/keep everything?

You will lose everything when you create a new Apple ID, since your new Apple ID will not be able to access your content and data.

What you CAN do is either

1. Continue to sign in with the old Apple ID just to access the old content...kinda cumbersome and not really a good fix

or

2. Create a Family Sharing Plan, where both Apple IDs will have access to the content from the old Apple ID. Here's how: Family Sharing - Apple Support

There may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps as stated above. Also see Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. The discussion was IOS, but the general guidelines apply.
