Are you using your son's Apple ID? Go to Settings. What do you see at the top of the page? Is it your son's name and picture? If so, you need to tap on that, swipe to the bottom of the screen and tap Sign Out. You will be asked for his Apple ID passcode. Ask him to type it in. Then, sign in with your own Apple ID. If you don't have one, you'll need to create one.

The fact that your son was on his phone at the time you were setting yours up has nothing to do with this.

Ok, try this.
Make sure you have a contact entry for yourself. Go to Settings>Contacts>My Info and tap on it. Select your contact information.
Did you use his Apple ID to set up the phone?
Thank you for your reply. When I look at contacts it says Alfie at the top with my phone number. Also by his name it says ‘me’ as in it’s his phone. In settings it has my name and is signed in with my Apple ID ***i

Thank you Idris, I have done what you suggested and it has worked and now says the phone is mine (had to change my name on the contact list from 'mum' to 'Polly'. However, the contact list is still my son's contacts and none of mine?

I think what happened was Alfie was on his phone when I was trying to set up the 8 plus and it synced with his phone - I was going to set it up manually as I don’t have iios11 on my previous iPhone.
Please help me someone - how do I change the settings to show me as the owner of the phone and to have my contacts not my sons!
You need to restore the phone to new condition and start over. To restore your phone to new:
