Phone number keypad doesn’t work in-call

I just got a new iPhone X and while I am on a call, the phone keypad won’t work. For example, on an automated system where it wants me to “press 1 for English,” nothing happens when I press the “1” - the system doesn’t register that I have made a choice. I thought it was just a fluke but it has happened every time I reach an automated system requiring me to press a number on the keypad. I can’t find a setting controlling this. Anyone know how I can fix it?
