Question: My iPhone X Compass not working

I found my iPhone X (256GB, space gray) compass not working, with compass app open I have my correct location with Lat/Long & elevation but the compass itself seems like been frozen and doesn't move at all, It shows the compass rose but the bubble does not move when phone is moved. When you press on the screen the numbers light up & when you press the screen again the numbers go dim but that's all it will do.

Location Services are on and I have a purple arrow that shows the app is using my location.

I didn't find this issue when I bought this phone because I didn't use this function until this time I traveled to London and use Compass and google map for directions.

I have tried turning the phone many times but nothing.

The level app that is in the compass app works just fine.

One more thing I need to mention is: I thought this is SW related problem so when I found IOS 11.2.6 released, I updated immediately, and Compass worked for just 5 minutes!, and it back to not moving as before update, no matter what I tried, it's not working at all.

I made reservation with Genius Bar this Sat, I assume they won't change me a new phone, just send back to factory for further analysis instead, I paid 1000+ dollars for this phone, how frustrated.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.6

Just had the same issue but found for some reason my compass calibration was turned off. Check Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services - Compass Calibration.

System Services is all the way at the bottom of the Location Services menu. Hopefully it’s that easy for you.

Thanks buddy, as I mentioned, I tried everything I could, including "Check Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services - Compass Calibration"

In fact, I took my iPhone X to Genius bar last Sat, they run a diagnostic test on it and found Compass sensor not working....really a HW problem....and since this sensor is integrated with other sensors and mounted on the logic board, they have no others ways but send it back to factory for repair (Change the logic board), it will take about 10 - 14 working days....

It is sad that they didn't change me a new one even I just used for about 2 months, and they offered my a iPhone 6 (16GB) as a backup during this period, which is barely no use (I don't know what I can do with 16GB iPhone6 nowadays...)

There is no any magnet nearby, I just use normal UAG case, and I used similar cases before on my iPhone7,6S..etc. and no such issue, and if you read my description above I mentioned when I updated to 11.2.6, Compass worked for about 5 minutes.....this can excluded any magnet concerns....

I found that shaking my device unfreezes it, but it can be as much as 100 degrees off, which I think you will agree is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. It works for a short time after a hard reset, but becomes frozen again very quickly. Going into settings is only a short term fix. I have several compass apps, one of which, I am developing and it only fails on the iPhone X, works perfectly on the other four iPhones I have!
