Macbook Pro not recognizing printer driver

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running El Capitan. I'm having trouble printing. I have a Canon 3 in 1 printer/scanner/fax.
I can scan just fine, but when I try to print something, I receive an error message (regardless of whether I'm trying to print a PDF or a word file. The message says something like, "In order to print, you must install a printer driver."

So I found the install disk that came with the printer and reinstalled (or thought I was reinstalling) the print driver. Everything went fine with the installation - no error messages.

Afterwards, I tried to print again and got the same error message. I've already reset my SMC and my NVRAM. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Thanks.
