I can receive messages in Imessage on my laptop but I cannot send them. What can I do?

I can receive messages in Imessage on my Macbook air but I cannot send them. The messages are sent/received just fine on my iphone. Imessage on my macbook is also logging messages - so it seems i am correctly logged into my apple id. Why can I not send messages?
