"what is a smart album or smart playlist?"

I have never gotten into using "smart files" or "smart playlists" or "smart albums" simply because I can't seem to find out what is meant by "smart". Can anybody tell me exactly what is meant by Apple's definition of "smart" anything?

Smart playlist for all of an artist's music I am subscribed to Apple Music and am trying to create a smart playlist for ALL of an artist's music. However, when I create one, only 6 songs are shown in the playlist, though the artist has close to 100 available on Apple Music. I'm not sure why this is. Does a smart playlist only work with music I've actually downloaded to my Mac?

Smart Playlists on macOS not Syncing with iOS and watchOS Does anyone know why Smartplaylist on Mac no longer sync with other devices? I pay for iTunes Match as well not that, that should have anything to do with it. It looks like Apple may have taken away this feature for smart playlists and only allowed playlists to sync to other devices if you don't pay for Apple Music. Use of Clean/Explicit Data for Smart Playlist How is it still not possible to use the clean/Explicit tag info in smart playlist? Any tag/song data should be able to be used in a smart filter. To have to manually edit each song is just crazy in 2019. Many of us love our music and would like a realistic way to share with others who may not share our tolerance for what they consider explicit, not to mention children. Please advise/address this. Smart Albums, Smart Folders, and Smart Playlists are just searches that show you the content that matches the search criteria. The items in the Smart containers are the actual files, not copies or anything like that.
