Touch ID not working if I keep phone idle for more than 10 minutes

If I keep a phone my idle locked for 10 mins and seem to switch it on the touch ID doesn't seem to work. I have to manually enter the password but when I immediately lock it and try the touch ID it seems to work just fine.

iPhone 8, iOS 11.2.6
