My older Macbok pro with a new (this week) 2Tb seagate barracuda internal hdd is running very slow. Spinning ball, dropped or hanging apps. ( and yes, I know that a ssd is way faster!)

Any Suggestions?

Background- it may have nothing to do with the hdd, because 1 month ago I went abroad and used the wifi in the airports/ hotel. Upon returning, the system was so slow. My Mac guy suggested from first aid, etc. that I transfer some off, backup then wipe the drive and start over. This did not help-still slow. In desperation I even used an external drive as an internal while getting another drive. That was crazy slow as well. Now the barracuda. Have to think something bad is hanging around...in software, virus etc.

Please see the etracheck

(in full disclosure. I don't know what I don't know regarding repairs. Any guidance is much appreciated.)

I think an SSD would have probably provided better performance. I had a rotational HD and after it was corrupted I switched to a 7200 RPM hard drive (a WD Black 750 GB). It improved performance but I still got a lot of beachballs and slow application loads and slow/hanging application quitting. The worst was if I wanted to select a non-default application to open a file (for example a PDF using Preview instead of my default Adobe Reader). I had to hold it there or it reset, and it could take up to a minute before all my options were available.

A Seagate Firecuda (hybrid SSD/hard drive) might have been a reasonable choice to bridge the gap between better performance and high capacity. Each one contains an 8 GB SSD portion that's supposed to improve the performance of OS boot as well as the most commonly accessed applications.

Up until a month ago- before traveling everything was fast enough (not ssd performance, but good enough.) This is the 5th drive- going from 500, 1TB, 2TB X 3. All previous to one month ago were okay. (Having spent weeks transferring, cloning, etc) data I am over all things computer. ;/

IFF I am going to invest in a ssd for another $1k + for 2-4 TB I will upgrade machines and go for it.

Sooooo, I need to get this barracuda working. Figure out what is making it's performance lag. And fix asap.

Well - a 2TB SSD will go more for about $500 these days. The price is going down and the old concerns about longevity are rather unfounded now. Also - nobody really needs 2 TB in an internal drive except for convenience. 240 GB is usually enough for the operating system and applications, and most bulk data can be offloaded to an external hard drive.

In some ways an SSD is a lazy way out because the brute force speed and extremely reduced seek time can mask configuration issues. I still think it's a worthwhile investment and extremely cheap these days. I'd consider it. You've already got a 2 TB hard that could easily go in a USB enclosure.

My older Macbok pro with a new 2Tb seagate barracuda internal hdd is running very slow. Spinning ball, dropped or hanging apps. Suggestions
