How to Improve MacBook Pro (2012) Poor Performance

Hello!

My MacBook Pro (mid 2012, I believe) has always run smoothly, until a few days ago when it began to run much more slowly in everything I do. The beachball is running quite a bit, and I have no idea what precipitated this! I've done everything I can think of, including using CleanMyMac to delete as much 'junk' as I could, and now have 256 GB freed up, which has not noticeably helped. I have attached an EtreCheck report below, which is tough for me to understand. Any feedback on how to at least partially restore my computer's performance would be greatly appreciated! Note: I have already removed the adware through the EtreCheck app, as well as a few of the unsigned files.

Thank you!!!

EtreCheck version: 4.3.2 (4D034)

In your recent report, I can't find any remaining Bad Actors that could be using nearly 10 times more processing power than the usual under four minutes Etrecheck usually takes to run. An old battery will slow your Mac somewhat, but not to this level.

I think you need to replace your boot drive. When you do, the drive cable sometimes shows up as an issue, making the whole process a nightmare. I suggest getting an external enclosure, adapter, or "toaster" device, and using it to hold the new drive while you do a NEW Install of MacOS.

Some have said, "just replace the cable, its cheap".

Then bring over your Users, settings and Applications using Setup Assistant on first run (or migration assistant later) and get the new drive ready to go before attempting surgery.

Ok, you have a lot of junk installed. But, first: you have a very slow 5400 rpm hard drive which does everything about 33% slower than a standard 7200 rpm drive. I replaced mine with an SSD and added RAM and it is very fast.

You also have adware installed. Download and run malwarebytes for mac, that should get rid of it.

And, uninstall both Bitdefender and Cleanmymac according to their instructions. Neither is necessary and may create havoc with your system.

Also, delete all the items in your login items. Not necessary, you can launch them when you need them.

After all of that, run the report again.

Jun 16, 2018 6:04 PM in response to IrishJC7

you have Drive-Vendor extensions loaded (but no sign of the drive).

These can be problematic because sometimes they try to "help" you by leaving the drive in an otherwise unsupported format, such as Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) and simulate MacOS file system on top of that.

If the drivers do not load or are not available, the drive may not be readable. This may happen after a system upgrade or worse yet, after a data disaster.

I had a 7200 RPM drive with High Sierra for less than a month before I broke down and got an SSD. It helped with bulk transfer speeds, but didn't necessarily help with all the beachballing and assorted slowdowns. The problem is supposed to be all those little files that the operating system is sampling where it's flitting from place to place on the platter. The specs for the Hitachi Travelstar 5400 and 7200 versions both have a typical 12 ms seek time.

https://www.hgst.com/products/hard-drives/travelstar-5k1000

An SSD practically eliminates seek time.

The pain in the neck is, you can't just remove them, if what I described is correct.

You would need to roll all the data off to another drive, remove the Drivers from the Mac, Restart the Mac, Erase the drive with Disk Utility, then you could put the stuff back on it.

Here is a test you could do:

Restart in Safe Mode or Recovery (no third-party drivers, and only minimal MacOS drivers load). Run disk Utility. Check what format the drive is (should be GUID) and what the Volume types are (should be MacOS HFS+ extended (journaled)).

If the types are correct for native MacOS, then you don't need to re-write the drive, and can just remove those Utilities.

If the volume type is NTFS, then a re-write would be needed to eliminate the Drivers.

Thank you!! That seems to have helped substantially. Still not back to "baseline," but considerably improved. I've copied the most recent report below. If there is anything else I should do, please let me know! Your help is appreciated!

2018-06-16 21:19:24 Last Shutdown Cause: 3 - Hard shutdown

End of report

You also need to keep an eye on your battery - it is approaching the end of its life. And you had a hard shutdown - why, I'm not sure. And, follow Grant's recommendations for the drivers. FWIW, external drives do not need anything to be able to function - they just need to be formatted correctly and then it's plug-in and use.

Thank you all for your help! I ended up replacing the stock hard drive with a Crucial XM500 1 TB drive. After formatting it, while connected externally, I tried to clone it, and got an error message at the very end. I tried shutting down and booting from the new SSD anyway, and it worked! It was like the computer was brand new. I installed the new SSD and the performance is probably better than before. I also wanted to replace the hard drive cable just to be safe, which was actually far more difficult (just the bending and creasing to fit the layout) than the actual SSD itself, but everything has been resolved and I appreciate all of your help!
