I would prefer to install High Sierra onto a stand alone hard drive
Hi. I would prefer to install High Sierra onto a stand alone hard drive to check whether my hardware will work. How would I do that please?

Here is how you do that: Upgrading macOS without fear.

FWIW, these are the hardware requirements.
Connect the drive, reformat it if needed, open the High Sierra installer, and specify it when setting up the installation.

How prompt were you many thanks. How then would I open my computer using the drive please?
It’ll be the startup disk after the installation is complete. To change it later, use the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences or restart with the Option key held down.
