Emergency shutdown and Fans spinning most of the time

It's been months that my macbook pro [mid 2012 (pre- retina) running El Capitan] has the fans going wild and freezing every now and again. Sometimes even down emergency shut down.

It's almost impossible to work with this computer.

Fans run very high around 80% of the time. When having a browser open ( I tried Chrome, Safari, Firefox), fans are always on 100 and the computer is super slow. Very often the fans go crazy when the computer is sleeping or before startup (after the startup sound, before system is loaded).

Usually fans start going crazy when

- doing copy/paste (tetxt)

- scrolling a website or word or PDF document

- trying to save stuff

- switching between apps/windows

Right now fans go crazy whilst riding this text.

What I tried to solve this issue:

- physically cleaned the fans

- reset NVPRAM

- reset the SMC

- run the Apple Hardware Test. (everything fine apart from the battery that needs "service"

- clean desktop

- uninstall all unused applications

- clean documents

- hardware test

- run malware test

- all my apps and system are always pretty much up to date

- go to mac store and talked with a genius. he did another hardware test. everything is ok according to this test. The genius could not help me whatsoever.

Today again te computer did an emergency shut down (all together it's around th 4th tim in 4 months)

Console says:

Mar 4 14:46:29 localhost kernel[0]: Previous shutdown cause: -82

Mar 4 14:46:29 localhost locationd[88]: locationd was started after an unclean shutdown

What does -82 mean?

Anybody has an idea how to fix this?

Any help highly appreciated

An update on this issue:

-82 seems to indicate an issue with the thermal sensor

macos - Are OS X shutdown cause and sleep cause numbers listed/explained anywhere? - Ask Different

I went to several computer shops, until I finally found one that would change the thermal paste. Now everything works perfect again!

Some thoughts. It is always possible you have a broken temperature sensor, which is causing the software to think the Mac is getting too hot. Unless of course you can feel the cases and it is too hot.

Your battery has a lot of cycles on it. Not the limits Apple expects

<Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks - Apple Support>

but you are at 70% of the estimated charge cycle count.

When your fans are cranking up, what does Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor say is consuming the most energy. Keep in mind, it could be CPU, GPU, network and/or storage.

You do have a 3rd party SSD installed. I'm not actually picking on the SSD, as I own this exact same SSD down to the make/model/size and I used it in a 2011 MacBook Pro without issue. It now lives in my 2009 iMac that is my everyday work systems. But if there are any issues with the installation, temperatures sensors, etc... associated with its install, that might affect the behaviors you are seeing.

PS. my understanding of noatimes is that it does not force file last access times to disk. On rotating disks, this can give a slight performance improvement when lots of files are being accessed. I guess on an SSD, it can cut down on the number of times SSD cells are written just because a file was accessed.

But it really does not have anything do do with TRIM. TRIM is a way for the file system to tell the SSD that it just deleted a file, and that the blocks that used to be allocated to the deleted file may be moved to the SSD's garbage collection queue to be cleaned and made available for future writes.

A number of things stick out to me.

1. SIP is disabled, and Gatekeeper is set to anywhere. Nice target for malware, zero-day exploits and software vulnerabilities. Privilege escalation on El Capitan is a serious vulnerability to start with, but you're making it even easier.

2. There's a kernel extension com.wch.usbserial in /Library/Extensions and presumably a relative wch.usb.usb in /System/Library/Extensions

- what are they for? Look like good candidates to remove and test for anything like what you're experiencing

3. The noatime launch daemon - what are the program arguments for that, and why do you need it?

4. You've got a bunch of processes named only as 'plugin-container' burning up both CPU and memory. Find those in Activity Monitor, locate their source (Info > Open Files and Ports) and try removing whatever they belong to.

Don't do any of the above unless you have a backup, and having made any changes, be sure to restart the mac to clear anything still loaded in running memory.

Thanks for your answer

> I am quite careful what applications to install, there are a few indispensable apps that are not on the app store. I did re-enable gatekeper.

SIP I disabled in a desperate move, some time ago because of this issue... I just re-enabled it.

Btw, I used malwarebytes to check for any malware on my computer and the results were negative (no malware found).

@1 - malware isn't the only or even main issue so much as both signed and unsigned apps taking liberties with your personal data. Having SIP off and allowing apps from anywhere just increases your exposure, although to be fair having them on doesn't make you spectacularly safe anyway. Running 10.11 is a security issue in itself, as there's privilege escalation exploits bandied around the internet that will let any app running without privileges acquire root.

@2 - they don't have to be malware to be responsible for causing problems

@3 - I know what it is, but the question is why are you using it. It shouldn't be necessary, and depending on what arguments it's being run with it may or may not be causing problems.

@4 - Make sure in the View menu you choose All Processes, then sort by %cpu and look for procs that are near the top of the table and of which there are several of the same name. Or post us a screenshot of everything running at over 10%.

1&2 ok. i might look into upgrading to sierra

3 to be honest, I do not remember. I used an app for the trim (chameleon), I don't think I did anything manually. The SSD sits in there for about 3 years and my memory is not very long-term 😕

4 Now it's WindowServer (i'm in a quite moment without fans). When the fans go crazy it usually is kernel_task

Mar 5, 2018 7:06 AM in response to BobHarris

Bob, you might be right about the temperatures sensors. I installed the iStat Menu, and normally fans go super crazy when I'm on about 45º (the computer doesn't feel very hot then).

So I really don’t know where this noatimes comes from.

For the battery cycles: yes, I know it's been quite a time since I get the alert to service the battery. But it shouldn't affect any of the computers performance?

How do I know if it is really the temperature sensor? And why does it make the system go so slow?

Out of interest, with that SSD, did you also use a noatime script when mounting it (for the record, noatime scripts are a hack supposedly to reduce i/o by not writing file access times to disk)?

I did not use noatime. And I just checked my iMac, where I have manually enabled TRIM for my Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD.

Actually, there are reports of a reduced capacity battery showing down the Mac. It DOES NOT cause high fan speeds, but it seems the power management may fake high kernel_task CPU usage as a way to slow things down so that battery drain is reduced to extend the battery charge.

Again, this fake high kernel_task CPU is just to fake out the process scheduler, it does not actually use the CPU during this high kernel_task usage report. It is just jiggering the numbers the process scheduler uses to decided when and how much time to give to other processes.

I do not really know for sure how you figure out if it is a temperature sensor.

You could make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store, and see if they can tell if the sensor is failing.

As for making a system go slow, the power management software will slow down the rate it gives the CPU to different processes, as well as tell the CPU to slow down its clock cycle when it thinks the system is getting too warm.
