Chrome causes MBP to freeze. Tried disabling graphics switching in Energy Saver but that also causes freeze.

I just bought this MBP secondhand. I downloaded Chrome and as soon as I tried to open it, my entire laptop froze; the trackpad and keyboard quit working. I Googled and found a suggestion to disable automatic graphics switching in Energy Saver but that also causes my laptop to freeze; when I restart the box for automatic switching is checked again, and again unchecking causes everything to freeze. Is there a solution to this problem or have I bought a lemon? I can return it.
