MacOS High Sierra freezes during download.

High Sierra freezes during download after a couple of attempts. This seems to be a common problem for some users as well. There are also reports on High Sierra installation freezes even if download is successful. Instead of High Sierra how can I download and install Sierra or El Capitan?
