DVD won't mount

See if repairing permissions helps. If not, then go to the OS Help Menu & in the search field type dvd.
Scroll down & click on the topic My CD or DVD doesn't appear on my desktop.

If the above does not help, then please post back w/the model of your G5 iMac?

What type of DVD did you get in the mail?

Have you tried the other dvd troubleshooting solutions mentioned in the OS Help Menu besides the one I mentioned?

Well if cleaning your drive w/a CD/DVD cleaning kit does not work, then I suggest that you contact Apple if you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare. Otherwise, you will need to take your computer to your local AASP.

I STARTED HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM LAST NIGHT. DID YOU EVER GET ISSUE RESOLVED?

Change the drive. It takes about 6 minutes. I got a new superdrive today, warranty. There are 4 screws and the whole operation took 6 minutes.

My father has a iMac G5 20 inch 1.8 Ghz. Suddenly the Superdrive DVD/CD (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825, Firmware DBN7) shows odd behaviour.

It still reads CDs. But when a DVD is introduced, it will start DVD Player automatically, but then there is no hint of the disk. Neither does it show on the desktop, nore would it play. DVD Player would not eject it, but the ejct button on the keyboard would.

Any idea what might be causing this? - I had just performed the "Pro update"! Thanks for your help!

Have you tried any of the troubleshooting solutions mentioned in this thread?

they say DVD-R on them.

If it says "DVD-R" on them then they aren't regular commercially pressed DVD movies, but "burned" copies.

One possibility may be that they haven't been "finished" properly by whoever burnt them. THis often prevents playback on other computers.

DVD-R discs are also more fragile than commercially pressed discs, and may have been damaged in the post.

Do regular "pressed" DVD movie discs still play?

Ok, are you thinking it is a software problem?

Clearly, if it working with iTunes and CDs, could it be a problem with DVD Player? I have not reinstalled this programme.

Permissions are ok.

Please tell me what your thoughts are!

Suggest that you try the troubleshooting methods already mentioned in this thread. Then we can figure out if the problem is software or hardware related.

Since the problem is only with commercially pressed DVDs they could be the problem and/or the drive needs cleaning.
