DVD won't mount

i just bought 2 dvds in the mail and i can't get them to mount. when i put them in they spin for about 40 seconds then eject without the computer saying anything. other dvds work fine but these 2 new ones don't. i tried using windows media player, VLC player and quicktime to play them but since they won't mount i can't tell the players what to open. can anybody give me any ideas on how to get them to mount?

I am having the same problem and it seems that it is becoming more common as of late. This issue suspiciously occurred after a software update about 2 months ago.
Commercial DVDs play fine. ALL non commercially burned DVDs aren't recognized at all any more and are spit out after 30 seconds. This includes backed up data files stored on DVD. (Isn't much good to back up your files to DVD if you can't ever access them again, now is it?!) The content doesn't seem to matter. Again, all the DVDs in question played or mounted FINE without any problem 2 months ago BEFORE the software update.
I have tried all the trouble shooting suggestions in this thread and then some, to no avail.
Aside from calling Apple....any further suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Trixi,

I take it these non-commercial DVDs were readable on this very computer before, were they not?

I must say my problem was with commercial DVD (Europe zone) only. After a couple of attempts, and a couple of restarts, my problem just disappeared. - I cannot explain this episode. Hopefully, it will not become intermittent.

Have you also tried reinstall DVD Player. My version was 4.6.5 and for the framework 4.7.0

Good luck,

Bernd

Bernd--Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, they played without an issue up until a couple of months ago.
I did a complete Tiger re-install last night and the issue still remains.

I do have a couple random non-commercial DVDs that WILL mount and play. I started to think it might be a media issue, since they are both Verbatim. But, others that are on Verbatim won't mount at all, so I guess that's not it.
Besides that still wouldn't explain why they USE to mount and now, do not.

Makes no sense.

In a situation like this there are essentially four possibilities, I think, Trixi:

1) the discs themselves have become damaged or dirty. Burnt DVD's are more fragile than commercial pressed ones.

2) the lens of your drive is a bit dirty and having problems reading some material

3) the laser in your drive is losing strength and accordingly having trouble with some material. (this inevitably happens over time, but shouldn't really be rearing its head yet)

4) the drive itself is slightly miscalibrated and this is causing problems with some material , but not others. (the solution for 3 and 4, I'm afraid, with the slot loaders, is essentially a drive replacement)

1 and 2 are the most likely
