virus or malware: both safari and chrome had homepage taken over by 'playsearch'

virus or malware: both safari and chrome had homepage taken over by 'playsearch'

Hi I have tried deleting extensions on the browsers and it did not help.

Does anyone have any suggestions. I ended up uninstalling Safari because Chrome appeared to be cleared after deleting extension, but the malware or whatever it is must still be on my computer.. macbook pro. I downloaded Opera and Tor, but I would really like to use Safari. Any ideas on virus software I could use or how to get rid of this Playsearch?

thanks.

Version of macOS installed on your Mac?

How did you uninstall Safari? Safari is part of the system.

Finder > Applications

Make sure Safari is in the Application folder.

If it is not in the Applications folder either apply the latest Software update or reinstall the macOS.

How to remove Playsearch?

1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

Enter this address https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

in the Safari address bar.

Download, Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan” button to remove adware, if present.

Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

2. Disable all extensions and test.

Turnoff or uninstall extensions.

Delete all text in the Smart Search field, click the magnifying glass , then choose a search engine from the list.
