iCloud photo upload - startup disc full

I have a MacBook pro retina display bought in early 2017. OSX El Capitan version 10.11.6.

I keep getting the message start up disc full.

So I buy a load of storage on icloud to upload my photos and vids, which take up 60% of my startup disc.

I then get this message:

i dont understand. I am getting the large files of my disc, onto the cloud but cant because it's full? so confused. please help.

iCloud/Memory Frustrations I spent the WEEKEND culling my files, after getting sick and tired of the "Your disk is almost full" message.I'm a photographer so I have 100,000's of image files.My 2017 iMac has a 2 terabyte HD. I deleted 100's of gigabytes of files ... lots of duplicate files and video files. NO MATTER How many gigabytes I Trash, and yes, Empty the Trash, or move to one of my 14 external HDs ... after a few minutes it says I only have like 10 gigs space left ... and I keep getting the "Your disk is almost full" message!It's frustrating having my photos in the Cloud when I'm working and have to wait for the images to download!
