Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
The items (in blue) shown here have just stopped opening today (they were OK yesterday , although Spotlight does work. Can anyone tell me how to sort this out?

Yes. the only one I had was Carbon Copy Cloner which I removed, only these remain:-
It's working at the moment but is very unreliable, this time it wasn't working when I first booted up today, so I did a re-start (NOT a Safe Boot) and it was O.K.!?
Boot into Safe Boot mode, and try the menu bar items out, and then boot normally. Status after normal reboot?
Also, those other non-Apple menu bar items may be conflicting with the normal System menu bar items. If the first paragraph above does not work, try systematically removing each non-standard, menu bar items until normal functionality returns.

The SAFE BOOT method did work and I did have another (3rd party) item in the menu bar and removal of it cured the problem - for a while.
Today it's started 'misbehaving' again, so I suppose I've got to regularly 'safe boot' it!
Did you try removing all the non-Apple items?
Try going to System Preferences and in the various panes, remove the items from the toolbar. Restart and add them back. Test.
