Flow Transition stopped working

I see that I'm not alone.

I'm at the end of an important project, and I'm about to start submitting to the client for feedback. Due to a lack of B-Roll, I've been using the 'FLOW Transition' and it has been fantastic.

BUT THEN IT STOPPED WORKING.

What it seems to do now is some sort of 'dissolve' where the one side of the transition freezes and then the other side dissolves in. On the forums I see that this has happened to others for over a year.

- I've tried a different machine, with 'High Sierra' (mine is still Sierra)

- I've tried exporting an XML

- I've tried deleting rendered content

- I've tried changing to a new codec

- I've tried 'Proxy', 'Better Performance' and 'Better Quality'

- and yes, I've tried deleting the preferences.

NOTHING SEEMS TO FIX THIS...

Apart from re-installing.. I've tried everything.

I'm baffled... and I'm now totally screwed.. PLEASE HELP.

Actually, it doesn't even need to be a multicam.. ANY clip with effects on it breaks the 'Flow Transition'.

Disable the effects and then it starts working again.

It's not a library thing, it's a much more obvious BUG.

Hello Tom,

This was an existing edit that look good, and that already had many 'Flow' transitions that were working well.

It was at some point that the plugin stopped working.

Even moving to another machine did not solve it.

I feel that the library somehow gets broken, as I've just started a new library with the same footage, and taken the same shot applied the flow transition, AND IT WORKS !

Hello Success1975,

At least we are not alone! It seems that it's something that should clearly be fixed.

The workaround I find works, is to have NOTHING 'on top' of the clip, AND no effects AT ALL.

Then I render that out, and the 'Flow' works, and bring the render back in, and switch off the original.

If I have a multi-camera setup, I have to do it multiple times... it's kinda crazy.

I hope Apple fixes this soon,

All the best,

crisb.

FCPx 10.4 - BUG - Flow Transition not working with Effects - YouTube

Let me know what you think 🙂

Also, I do remember it working no matter what the content or effects.. but it seems that at some point it stopped working.

I'm happy that at least I can get it to work at all.

cheers,

Did you try deleting preferences (always the first to try when something misbehaves)?

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences.

I wonder if maybe, just maybe, you are asking too much of the Flow transition. It appears that you use it heavily. IMHO this is perhaps not the best option.

The Flow transition should be able to cope with small cuts, even out some small imperfections, but it is not a panacea for smoothing out very evident ones.

Rather than trying to disguise cuts, I suggest you embrace them.

I prefer short fades to/from black which acknowledge that something was not filmed continuously. Just my $0.02

Hello Luis,

Yes, as I'd mentioned in my question, I had deleted the preferences.

I don't believe I'm asking too much, as this was an existing edit that was looking good and the 'flow' transitions were working well. However, when it came to render it out, this strangeness started to happen.

I found that it simply stopped working and went into this different 'mode'.

I literally have until tomorrow to fix this.

Again, I see on the boards that I'm not the only one that has experienced this problem.

Thanks for your reply though.. and if you have any other thoughts, I'm all ears ! 🙂

If you could post a short example of where the Flow transition works and doesn't work, then maybe we can suggest alternatives.

I tried one example, with and without effects, and it "works" in the sense that it does its thing in both cases. I don't like the results anyway. I think there are probably better ways, as I wrote before. Nevertheless, my little experiment seems to contradict your assumption.

Hi Cris,

I have been facing the same issue since FCP X 10.4 was released by Dec 2017. I am the most unfortunate person, since I was using the flow, at least 10 times a day. I tried all solutions including reinstalling FCP X and even changing the Mac Book Pro Retina display model from mid 2012 to mid 2015. Wasted lot of time and money, but of no use.

Also, often export becomes a failure, due to 'Flow' transition, with the error code 50. I am able to identify the Flow which stops the export, by checking the frame where export terminates.

Hope, sooner Apple will rectify this issue.
