How to cope with no startup "Bong!"...?

Last Friday I took delivery of a new iMac 27” and have one annoying “problem” — without the startup sound I find it very difficult to know exactly when to hold down the relevant keys for, say, starting up into Safe Mode, Recovery Mode or wanting to get to the Startup Manager to choose a start drive. It usually takes several attempts to get it right, but more often than not I either hold down the key too early or too late, and the Mac just boots up normally!

I have sent Apple feedback about this. I work alone at home, and there´s no reason that I can see as to why I shouldn´t be given the option of having the startup “Bong!” or not, and it shouldn´t be done to guesswork IMHO. I´ve been used to the sound for years and sorely miss it.

I´d be very grateful for any help/suggestions/tips! Thanks! Ian.

Well, this is not foolproof but when you do a restart there is a delay as the machine starts the shutdown process then the screen will go black - it's off - momentarily. At that time you can hold down the shortcut keys. I find that works almost all the time. For a cold boot the machine is already off, so hold down the shortcut keys right after you push the Power button.

When I say the screen is black I mean the same black you see when it is completely shut down.

Have you tried increasing the volume? Disconnect any audio equipment you may have connected to the speaker/headphones jack on the computer then turn up the volume. Restart to see if the chime is now audible.

I do recall somewhere Apple was going to remove the startup chime. However, if you hold down the various shortcut keys they should be picked up when the computer actually restarts. You do not have to wait for a chime.

Thanks for replying, Kappy! Apple removed the chime permanently in 2016, as far as I know, so turning up the volume doesn't, unfortunately, work!! People were apparently complaining about the distraction in offices, libraries etc. My problem (and this must be the same for millions of other Mac users!) is finding exactly the right moment to hold down the keys when the screen goes black — do it too early or too late and the Mac ignores them and boots normally! It looks like trial-and-error from now on. At least everything else works 🙂 Ian.

Thanks again, Kappy! I´ve tried out your suggestions and it´s still very much hit-and-miss — which is a shame, it used to be so easy! Today I rang up Apple Support here in Germany, and had an interesting session with a very polite chap whom I granted access (via my iPhone) to my desktop. I was able to show him I was doing things correctly, and he wasn't able to help me apart from saying exactly what you wrote. He did promise to talk to a software engineer colleague and get back to me. We shall see...! 🙂 He was at least able to ascertain that it´s not a hardware problem, because, occasionally, it does work!

Thanks for replying, dialabrain! Yes, quite, shutting down and then holding down whatever key/keys certainly works, but I want to be able to go to Apple Menu > Restart and then get into Recovery Mode, Safe Mode or whatever without shutting down first, as one could do very easily before Apple, in their infinite wisdom, removed the "Bong!". FWIW the Apple guy I talked to today also suggested dong this as well as what Kappy has posted. Looks like I´ll just have to change my ingrained habits...!👿 It´s the only "problem" with my new iMac, I´ll get used to it!
