How do I delete files without it being removed from the iMovie?

So I've been trying to clear up space on my computer and the files with audio and footage are in the way. I tried to delete them but as soon as I go to my project on iMovie, it doesn't exist and needs me to replace it. How do I keep the video intact while I remove the original files?

iMovie 10, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

If you delete from the Original Media file, that is located in Finder, that would delete the clip from the project. Deleting from any other folder in the Finder wouldn't delete from the project because a duplicate original of the clip would still remain in the Original Media folder. You would have freed up some space by deleting one of the two originals, however.

One option would be to share your project to Theater or to. a desktop folder, thus creating a standalone movie independent of the clips in any Finder folder. You could then delete your clips or even the project itself, as long as you don't intend to do any future editing.

How are you deleting the files (clips?), and from where?

All clips and photos that are in iMovie reside in the Original Media folder in the Finder. Those that are used in projects are thumbnails of the originals that refer back to the original that is located in the Original Media folder. If you delete a clip or photo from the Original Media folder it will disappear from all projects that are using that clip or photo. If you are using iMovie 10.1.4 or later, go into iMovie/Preferences and delete the Render files. That will free up some space. It is a harmless procedure. You also can purchase an external drive, format it Mac OS extended (journaled), and store your iMovie library there. iMovie will access it on the external drive.
