Saving .srt files

When editing .srt files in TextEdit, it saves as a VLC file (no matter what Unicode I check) and hides extension .srt. What do I need to change to save the files as .srt?

Show or hide filename extensions - Apple Support

This explain what to do for one file or for all files – not groups of files, or certain types of files.

TextEdit’s Save As dialog box has a checkbox to Hide the extension. The hiding/not-hiding is saved with the file attributes, so the Finder will respect that setting. I don’t know if it is possible to set it to unchecked as default setting - please let me know if you find it. Unhiding also makes TextEdit revert to either .txt (or .rtf), which is often unwanted (.srt, .html).

You may mant to look at other text editors, e.g. BBEdit. Much more powerful, but works great for quick edits too. (‘Unlicensed’ version is functional as ‘light’ version without further constraints (comparison).)

As for .srt: BBEdit is much smarter with opening files of a different text encoding. (“If a file’s encoding can’t be guessed, try [ordered list]”) Like a default for the exceptions. That helps a lot with accented characters.

A group of users exists that feel more comfortable with extensions hidden. Not me. I can see it for “.app” but not many other file types.
