Time Machine says not enough space on NEW drive?

Hi,

I have always used time machine to back up my iMac (3TB) to an external (3TB) drive. The external ran out of enough space to continue backups so I got a new 4TB drive. I followed the instructions to move the backup folder off the old backup drive and on to the new one. Then I pointed Time Machine to the new drive. It wont back up claiming there is not enough space...what could I have done wrong? Is it creating a complete new backup on top of the old backup I manually copied over?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Hello meegwell,

But you have setup the new drive differently. You copied your old backups onto it.

If you just erase the new backup drive and start fresh, it should run fine. I'm sure you will eventually have problems. Pretty much everyone with a backup drive that is too small eventually has problems. But you can easily fix them by erasing the backup drive. You can continue to use the old backup drive with Time Machine, although you might have to erase that too.

Just make sure to schedule those drive erasures so that you always have at one backup available.
