Upgraded iPhone 5 from iOS 6 to iOS 8 (MBP Mavericks)

I inadvertently upgraded iTunes 11 to iTunes 12 last week, and found that on my 2012 MacBook Pro I could no longer sync my iPhone 5 running iOS 6. So, I upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOS 8. My problems have now doubled:

(1) iTunes 12 does not see my iPhone 5, and therefore will not sync. The phone is plugged into the laptop.

(2) On the iPhone 5, even though I entered the correct password to my Gmail account in SETTINGS on the iPhone, the phone continues to insist that I enter my Gmail password in SETTINGS. I go to SETTINGS, enter the Gmail account name, click next, and I get a spinning wheel that goes nowhere.

So, how do I sync my iPhone 5 running iOS 8 to my Mavericks MBP running iTunes 12, and

how do I get my iPhone to accept and remember my Gmail password? The password is correct. I've tested it on my MBP and on my 3rd generation iPod Touch.

What does it say in Settings->General->About->Version?

The model does corresponds to an iPhone 5, but there is absolutely no current way to have updated it to iOS 8.

The iPhone 5 should have updated directly to iOS 10.3.3 at this point in time.

There is no reason why iTunes 12 would not see the iPhone 5.

If you updated to iTunes 12 from 11, than many things changed.

With the iPhone connected to the laptop a small iPhone icon should appear at the top under the playback controls (shaded in blue in the picture below), click on that to bring up the iPhone summary screen.

Upgrading an iPhone 5 to iOS 8 any time within the last several years is impossible without jailbreaking it, which forfeits all rights to support for the device.

Please double check. You can ONLY upgrade to the currently shipping release of iOS for your device.

It is indeed then updated to iOS 8, but not sure how that happened. Unless the update to iOS 10 requires an intermediate update when coming from less than iOS 7.

Anyway,

Have you tried other ports? Other USB cables?

Have you tried rebooting the iPhone?

Hold down the home and power / sleep buttons for 10 to 15 seconds or until the Apple logo appears, let the iPhone reboot.
